Hey RJ here, I started out hauling loads for a large privately-owned fleet for about 7 years. I thought it was a great way for me to make a living, hitting the big road while traveling across the country. Recently, I’ve seen many of my friends and fellow drivers ditch the high broker fees and middlemen to work independently. I knew it was my time, I was ready to go independent too. My relationship with my employer had broken down over the years. My supervisor never appreciated my value, which led to not getting enough miles to make good money. I also wasn’t happy with how I was being dispatched, it all began to feel like I was being set up for failure.
Well, I was done with all that, and now enjoy the freedom to come and go when I want, I set my own schedule, which means having more home time when needed, and choosing the type of work that I want, for the first time ever. No dispatchers or supervisors involved! I was able to pick the loads I wanted to haul and the destinations that made the most sense to my route.
I know that this isn’t the move for everyone, with great reward there is always risk. All I can say is I’m definitely happier now that I made the switch and with more money going in my pocket I have more time at home with my family.
